This bakery was recommended to me by some fellow campers when we were in the Fredericksburg area. I was wanting some German bread that was authentic and freshly baked. Old German Bakery and Restaurant met that need!
The property is very quaint. It sits right along the Fredericksburg drag known as Main Street.
It's been in the same location for many, many years.
When I arrived late morning, delicious breakfast smells hit me as soon as I walked in the door! Looking around I could see patrons enjoying everything from eggs and bacon to sausage and pancakes, toast, sweet pastries and coffee.
The bakery case was up front and a little to the right of the main seating area. There was a small area of space with the cash register/hostess area nearby. A young woman was busy taking care of a customer at the cash register. I loved the vibe of this café as there were just as many local workers as there were tourists.
The seating area was quite full however there was no one waiting at this point. I believe they were about to swing into their lunch menu but sadly since I wasn't there to have a meal I didn't explore that aspect any further. (Next time we are in the area we will definitely come in for breakfast)!
I studied the bakery case which had several varieties of authentic German pastries. Some shelves along the wall behind the pastries were the varieties of bread. I could see they had a slicer as well which I always appreciate.
They had white bread along with about four different styles of pumpernickel bread. I purchased a loaf of German 3-Seed Bread and a loaf of German Pumpkin Seed bread and had them sliced. Even though I had a box full of baked goods since the ones here were traditional to the German culture, I decided I would go ahead and purchase four of the pastries as well.
Schnecken looked much like a large cinnamon roll, with lots of raisins in all the nooks and crannies and a light glaze over the entire pastry. A "Crump" consisted
of a pastry below a thick (like an inch) layer of Bavarian cream, covered with a pastry and then the whole thing covered in powdered sugar. Looked kind of like a cream puff on steroids! The Pecan Covered Cookie is exactly that-the difference is there were so many pecan pieces on it you could barely see the cookie. Last but not least I also bought a Schneeballen.  Wasn't overly sweet but a very rich, buttery, tasting pastry shaped like a big knot. I'm hopeful I got the names correct but I will tell you there were NOT a lot of options left at 11AM-I would say to ensure the best variety of pastries-go early! I can't even imagine what it's like on the weekends as it was plenty busy during the week! So you may be wondering why four stars and not five. I stood at the bakery case and the cashier stood very close by but never offered to come over and wait on me. I went over to her and requested assistance. She didn't seem too pleased to be taken from her post. However, by the time I arrived at the cash register to pay she was much more pleasant.
All my bakery items were very reasonably priced, Which was a pleasant surprise.
We would certainly recommend stopping by for a meal or for freshly baked breads and pastries!

This place was definitely a so so place to eat. My friends and I just came from enchanted Rock and was hungry and saw this place on Yelp. It was busy outside so we figured it was good.
We were a party of 6. The host told us it was about a 30 mins wait so it wasn't too bad. We sat outside for about 20 mins before I went to ask her how long the wait was. She told me another 30 mins...
I said ok... And decided it wasnt worth the wait now but as soon as we were about to leave, the host comes out asking if she can split the party due to the fact that she didn't wanna keep us waiting any longer and that a table for the 6 of us would be a long wait.
We got seated and not long after (about 5 mins) a table with 6 chairs is available. She doesn't ask us if we would like to move there so when we asked, she said she seated other people....

    THE FOOD.
So I got the chicken Swiss with the pretzel bun without tomatos or pickles or mustard. The food itself should come with mayo, lettuce, and onions. When I got to food, I only got the chicken, bun, and lettuce. I had to wait for the waitress to notice me to request the missing items on my food but she didn't come over at all until I waved her down. By the time she brought everything I was missing on my chicken sandwich, it wasnt hot anymore.
My fiance got the house schnitzel. About 2 hours later, he has food poisoning. The German pan fries he got were flavorless.

I honestly wouldn't bother with this place. I'm sure there are people who love this place but I personally did not. My order was missing items and my fiance does not feel good after eating it. My friends thought their food was so so as well.
I don't recommend this place but if you want to try it, please don't expect it to be good.

I feel like this place is a bit of a tourist trap.

We went here for brunch on a Sunday morning around 11a. It was completely packed with lots of people waiting outside. There was about a 30 minute wait, but it went by pretty quickly. I assumed from all the people it must be worth the wait, but you know how assuming goes.

While we waited we went to check out the bakery area.  IF you put the word "bakery" in the name of your establishment, this should be an area where you shine, but not here. I suppose it is possible that you must get there early, but even the things they did have weren't all that impressive. A few trays of danish & a few loaves of bread. That's it. I didn't opt to try anything, so in their defense, it could be spectacular danish.

I was, also, put off by the fact that there were multiple signs about not serving German pancakes after 11a. I get from the standpoint of switching from breakfast to lunch, but you could achieve the same thing by simply having the host say we are switching to lunch at 11a or clearly stating on the menu when each is served so people know what part of the menu to focus on.

The food was OK. My husband had bacon, eggs, & toast. I had the potato pancakes & apple sauce. The portions were large. With beverages, the check came to about $25.

In general, I feel like this place goes a long way with their name and location. There are much better options if we are able to get off of Main St.

The very second I drove past this place I HAD to stop. It is like going back through time to the best memories you never had. The location is small, but warm. The food was amazing. My daughter had the german pancake with bacon on the side. She only asked for one pancake. One was enough. Im talking about a BIG pancake! It is great! A sight to see! I had the ultimate omelet. The perfect taste of the egg, vegetables, bacon ham and cheese are still on my mind as I type. Then we saw the bakery. My daughter had the chocolate chip pastry and I had the Apple turnover. Suffice to say the one hour drive to go back will feel like 3 hours of anticipation to try this again, and completely worth it!

Excellent German food! I had house Schnitzel with a tasty, creamy veggie-laden sauce; spatzel and warm German Potato salad.. authentic and yummy! .. about $16.
Difficult to find a parking spot, but I got lucky and parked in front!
The place is busy, busy and a bit noisy@ 1:30 Monday; but certainly worth having delicious lunch!
Will HAVE to purchase a few bakery items, as well ‍.. then shop the close stores and return another less-busy time for the others.
